MY PASSION FOR EDUCATION

By: Dr. Anecito P. Ambray

Today is my 65th birthday. This is the day I will compulsorily be retired from the academe, Saint Theresa College, after four and a half years of service as dean and instructor of the College of Business and Management Education.

Teaching has been and shall always be in my blood.  My father and relatives were teachers. I started my first grade at the age of five in a barrio school in Patongpatong, Madrid, then a barrio of Cantilan, this province. In l954, our family moved to the town where my father was already a teacher. I finished my elementary schooling in the public school and high school at the Saint Michael School (now college) where my father was then the school principal.

At age 15, I enrolled at the Cebu School of Arts and Trades (now Cebu State College of Science and Technology) and took up teaching course, Bachelor of Science in Industrial Arts and graduated in 1964. Our school fees that time was only P120 per semester. In my younger years, I loved writing and contributed many articles to the campus paper. I was also active in the ROTC; took up advanced course and helped our unit garner first place in the annual tactical inspection in the whole Visayas.

My Teaching Job

In summer of 1964, at the age of 19, as the youngest applicant I topped the Division Teachers’ Examination. My first teaching job was in Aras-asan Elementary School in Cagwait. I organized the Boy Scout troop; solicited drums and bugles from Aras-asan Timber Company and had camping at the nursery with the owner Don Pepe Sanvictores. I attended the Wood Badge Course, the highest training for scouters.

My activities in the barrio school were not left unnoticed by the school authorities who decided to transfer me to the capital town of the new province. At least I got rid of traveling by pump boat.  But in my heart I suffered pain because I had to leave the place where I met a girl and crushed.

The teacher’s salary that time was only P 223.00 per month. Hence, after attending the 1965 10th BSP National Jamboree, I decided to apply for a teaching job in the city. I was hired and taught for one year at the Boys High School Department of the University of San Carlos.

The following year, I transferred to the High School Department of Southwestern University and at the same time took up night studies in law and later on Bachelor of Science of Business Administration major in Accounting. I was also the editor in chief of “The Quill” school organ of the university and the moderator of the high school paper.

Married Life

Seven years after our last meeting I decided to marry my girlfriend from Aras-asan who already finished her studies. We decided to settle down in Mangagoy, Bislig because I got a job at the Employees Relation and Legal Department and then at the plywood plant of PICOP, the biggest lumber company in Asia. . At night, I taught again in the Andres Soriano Colleges handling law and taxation subjects.

After the death of my first child, we left Mangagoy, I worked in the provincial government then headed by Gov. Gregorio P. Murillo. At first I was the administrative officer of the Provincial Assessor’s Office for two years, then I transferred to the Commission on Audit as Auditing Examiner 111 assigned to the National Food Authority. I took the Auditing Promotional Exam given by the government and fortunately got 6th place in the whole country.

After refusing an offer as Auditor in Sultan Kudarat, I decided to work again in the province as Provincial Secretary.  After the assassination of Gov. Murillo in 1985, I served the same post under Gov. Salvacion C. Cejoco, then Governor Felicidad T. Pimentel and finally Gov. Primo T. Murillo. I attended the Junior Executive Training (JET) in Davao City, the Department Managers Training at the Development Academy Philippines (DAP) in Tagaytay City and the Executive course in Baguio City.

In 1982, with some chiefs of offices we organized the SCI Development Cooperative where I was subsequently elected Chairman of the Board and later on appointed General Manager. I also initiated the formation of the Project Tambayayong, the forerunner of the Army Reservists Association. I was a recipient of the Dangal ng Bayan award from the Civil Service Commission and the Outstanding Employee award from the province in the later years.

After office hours, I took part time teaching job at the Bukidnon State College – External Studies Center at the JPEHS building. On weekends, I proceeded with my study in Master of Arts in Education at STC and after that Master of Public Administration at the BSC – External Studies Center. We organized the SSPSC employees’ cooperative and the SSPSC alumni and had it registered with SEC.

In 1995, I threw my hat into the political arena without success. I went back to teaching job at the BSC branch until it was converted into Surigao del Sur Polytechnic State College. I enrolled in doctorate studies first at the University of Mindanao and later on at the Fr. Urios College (now a university) and finished a doctorate in Philosophy in Education. Due to an unstable income, I had to accept teaching job for master’s degree classes in Lianga SSPSC branch and in Bukidnon State College - San Francisco Agusan Sur Center.

Without a chance of getting an item at SSPSC, I applied for deanship at the STC which was vacated by the former dean, Dr. Gumanoy in May 2005. It was a challenging job because the department has the biggest population with only two regular teachers and the rest all part-time instructors. We streamlined the curriculum by creating a separate department for Accountancy and later on Information Technology and opened the BS in Public Administration I helped organize the STC employees’ cooperative, beautified the school campus by planting ornamental trees and maintained our supremacy in intramural games.

I was able to surmount the problems because of my strong faith in God and on my ability coupled with an all around education and wide experience in both private and the government sector. Despite of my age, I will continue serving the education needs of our people. It has been my lifelong obsession. As an educator, my passion for teaching in any manner or capacity, has no end. With God’s blessing I hope to continue my service to our people.
